Inverter 24V Victron Phoenix and GEL batteries in off-grid photovoltaic systems
In this case, our client asked us to install off-grid solar panels because he needed to power street lights and motorised barriers in a location with no electricity supply. In addition, the installation site required no maintenance. We opted to install GEL batteries without maintenance and a 24V inverter of Victron (Phoenix).
As you can see in the photos, both the assembly of the 24V solar inverter and the 12V GEL batteries were installed inside the polyester cabinet. The DC electrical protections to protect the solar panels (DC fuses, type A differential, photovoltaic circuit breakers and alternating current protections) were also installed in the cabinet itself.
PWM solar controller or MPPT solar controller?
The regulator in this case was a simple one from the Victron range, the inexpensive 20A Victron PWM Light solar panel regulator. For my taste, the best option would have been a good MPPT controller Victron SmartSolar.
Do the solar panels need to be maintained?
The 24V solar inverter works completely autonomously without any maintenance, with the calculation we made, the depth of discharge of the batteries is minimal and thus we ensure a long life with a reliable power supply and 100% renewable. Solar Panel Structures made-to-measure
We anchor the solar panel to the mast of a streetlight (pole) with solar panel brackets for streetlights that we made to measure for the occasion. The wiring to the cabinet is protected by the inside of the pole and reaches the cabinet without major problems.
The structure of the solar panel, as I have mentioned, was made to measure for the occasion, the inclination of the solar panel is designed to generate maximum production in the months of greatest need (winter) and that is why the inclination should be as vertical as possible. The orientation has also been studied and we orientate it towards the south-west so that the afternoon sun does not begin to be insufficient to feed the solar street lamp that begins to illuminate the area.
